Thermo Air Ireland have been supplying electrical heater batteries into the Irish market for over 20 years and during this time the same issues arise during the ordering, installation and commissioning stages. This takes up time on contractors, electricians and commissioning engineers. Thermo Air Ireland have put together a number of details that are vital, when selecting and ordering heater batteries. This will save time for all concerned and make sure the client is getting the correct product for their needs.
Electric HB Selection Criteria
A: Air volume
m3/sec or m3/hr
B: Duct dimensions
m2. Circular or rectangular ducting.
The combination of air volume and duct dimensions
dictates air velocity.
V: Air velocity
m/sec
Recommended air velocity = 2.5 – 3.5 m/sec
Minimum air velocity = 1.5 m/sec
Max air velocity = 8.0 m/sec
Special controls required if velocity is below 1.5 m/sec.
D: Air ∆T ˚C
Air off – Air on temperature
= ∆T ˚C = 5˚C to 20˚C = 15˚C ∆T
E: kW Load
Air Volume m3/sec x 1.01 x 1.2 x ∆T ˚C = kW Load,
Ex: 1.0 m3/sec x 1.01 x 1.2 x 15˚C = 18.18 kW
F: Power supply
Heater batteries come in 3 power supply types
220/1/50 hZ single phase
220/3/50 hZ single phase
400/3/50 hZ three phase
G: Controls
A large range of control options are available on request
Details on type of control required is vital when ordering, ranging from no controls for the heater battery to complete BMS packages. All are available and this information is vital when placing an order.

H: Environment
Electric heater batteries can be manufactured for
different IP ratings and environmental conditions, ranging from standard IP44 to IP65 and ATEX for offshore, chemical industry, oil industry and ships.
I: Instillation
The duct heaters can be installed in either a horizontal or a
vertical duct. The air must flow through the duct heater in the direction of the arrow shown on the duct heater. In a horizontal duct, the junction box may face either upwards or at 90° to either side. Installation with the junction box facing downwards is not allowed. The distance to or from a duct bend, fan, damper etc. must be at least twice the connection diameter.
Duct mounted circular heater batteries –
- Diameter 8 sizes: 100 – 400 mm dia.
